Our third week together has been a blast! Here's what we were up to...
In Reading...
We continued talking about "good fit" books and how to choose them for ourself. I'm hoping to post our adorable "i-pick chant"video soon. This week we introduce our third station in Daily 5, Buddy Reading. It's a student fave for obvious reasons and so beneficial to our reading fluency. We are discussing using our schema and clue from text to firm predictions. Try this at home with your child during your nighttime reading.
In Writing...
Last week we learned that authors include their whole story in their illustrations and even draw hard-to-make ideas. This week we focus on recording the words in our stories. Today, we learned how to stretch out our words to record each sound that we hear. At this stage in your child's writing, inventive or phonetic spelling is GREAT! This is what we are encouraging...for them to be confident young writers, spell the best they can and move on. It's hard as an adult, to not look at your child's writing and pick the spelling apart, but please try to refrain. A great deal of research indicates that this is very damaging to writing development. Right now, I am encouraging them to get their stories down on paper, spelling and conventions cone with time. For now we are keeping their stories in their writing folder which is why you haven't seen any of their hard work coming home. We will clean out our writing folders at the end of a writing bend, about every 5-6 weeks.
In Math...
This week, we are into our guided math stations. The students are working with and manipulating numbers up to 120. Please have your child practice writing numbers 100-120 at home. We are learning different ways to represent a number. For example, to represent the number 12, I could.... Draw a picture, write the number word, use base ten blocks, tallies, or write an equation 10+2=12.
In health...
We are learning about germs. We started by discussing where germs are found. The rest of the week we'll discuss ways to prevent germ sharing and how to be s germ buster. We'll also practice and talk about good hand washing
Reminders:
Please don't forget to join us for Curriculum Night this Thursday, September 3 beginning at 6:00 pm in the cafeteria for a brief PTA meeting. The first grade team will present as a whole in the music room for two sessions 6:25 and 7:15. This is a great time to come and see what we'll be learning this year, as well as the ins and outs of first grade.
*Note- I realized that posting the blog on Friday is just not realistic for me. I promise to keep you in the loop about what's going on, but I will be switching my posting days to Monday. Look back on Mondays for up-to-date reminders, events, and pictures from our classroom!
Now for some fun pics from our week!
Have a great week! See you Thursday at Curriculum Night!
Peace, Love, and Learning!
