It's hard to believe we have a second week in the record books. This week we settled down a bit and have adjusted into our routines. What an amazing group this is!!
This Week:
Our class is participating in Morning Meeting this year! Ask your child about it. It's quickly becoming one of our favorite times of the day. We start each day by greeting each other. Next, we move on to a small sharing portion. Last we do a quick team activity and then read our morning message for the day. In reading, we've been working hard to build our reading stamina. we surpassed our goal of 5 minutes. Yipee! We've been learning the 3 ways to read a book; read the words, read the pictures, and retell the story. We also started learning how to pick our own good fit books. We got to practice Thursday in the library. We kept these first library books in our browsing boxes at school, but you'll be seeing library books come home soon! In Writing Workshop this week, we learned that writers work is never done. We discussed that the words "I'm done!" are absolutely never said in writing workshop! That's because we know we can add to the words, add to the pictures, or start a new piece. Our friends were IMPRESSIVE this week during their writing time. They were so busy writing down all the stories from their lives. In math, we started unit 1. In this unit, we're starting by counting to 120, using a 100's chart to see patterns in numbers, and begin counting on from numbers. We began our first Social Studies Uniit "Our World". We compared globes and maps. We also began learning our city, state, and country.
Homework:
This week, please help your child recite their street address. They will be assessed on August 28 as part of their grade for this unit. This is a great time to review their phone number too!!
Also, please start having your child read 15 minutes each night. First grade is the largest expected gain in reading level and we progress VERY quickly. I cannot stress how important it is to have your child read daily. It's also a pretty fantastic way to settle down before bed, so add this to your routine.

Reminders:
-Please complete the volunteer requirements on the New Prospect webpage or click here. We LOVE our volunteers and it takes 48 hours to be cleared. Go ahead and get this done! (It must be done every school year too!)
-Sign-up for Class Dojo and download the app. You can check in on your child's progress throughout the week. We will discuss Class Dojo in more depth at Curriculum Night, but in a nut shell, Students can earn and lose dojo points through the school day. They earn them for things such as making good choices, helping others, working hard, etc. They can also lose them for breaking any of our 5 class rules. Please know in the next few weeks, students WILL lose DoJos as we establish boundaries and expectations. On Fridays, students will have the chance to cash-in their DoJo points for rewards.
